Sono: Players want to play more for themselves in the derby

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates legend Jomo Sono feels some players of his former team were playing for personal glory in Saturday's Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs.

The Buccaneers went down 1-0 to their rivals but wasted plenty of good chances to at least get a point at the FNB Stadium.

Sono still holds the record for the most goals in Soweto derbies with nine strikes and gave his thoughts on Saturday's result.

In quotes published on KickOff, Sono said: "Who were you expecting [laughs]? The derby is difficult man, it's difficult.

"It needs players with character, but if [Gabadinho] Mhango rises to the occasion and plays more for the team... the problem with the derby is, most of the time, the players want to play more for themselves sometimes.

"Maybe that's the problem you know, instead of playing for the team.

"Look for a guy who is better positioned to score on that day, then we all win, we all celebrate.

"Ja who knows, records are being broken all over the world, and this one of Jomo Sono there's someone who is going to break it, what can we say?"

Sono did go on to say that he thought Mhango had the capabilities to be a top striker for Pirates.

"Give him a chance, maybe he will get there Mhango, he is a very good goalscorer," Sono said.

"He's quick. He's a good player. He's sudden-quick you know."
