Cape Town - Highlands Park striker Peter Shalulile has vowed to continue repaying the faith shown in him by coach Owen da Gama.

Shalulile has been at the club for five years now in which time he has found the back of the net with regularity. But it took him a while to find his goalscoring boots.

Having arrived at the club in 2014/15, the Namibian striker only really rose to prominence in the 2017-18 season when his 15 goals helped secure promotion to the PSL.

Since then, Shalulile has proven to be one of the most dangerous strikers in the top-flight. The 26-year-old is second on the Absa Premiership goalscoring charts only to Orlando Pirates striker Gabadinho Mhango this season.

And he has expressed his gratitude for the trust shown in him by Da Gama even when he was not at his best.

"To be honest there were times when I would miss an open goal at training and in the game‚ but coach Owen kept his faith in me‚" Shalulile told TimesLIVE website.

"I had to reward him (Da Gama) by scoring goals.

"And that’s what I’m trying to do‚ to reward him as a player.

"I'm very thankful to that man because with other coaches if you miss in five games, they'll take you out.

"But my coach kept having faith in me and I’m so grateful to him‚ the technical team and my team-mates."

Shalulile then said the fact that Da Gama was also a striker in his playing days is a definite plus as he understands the ins and outs of leading the line.

"That’s a nice thing to work with someone who has gone through it because they understand that to be a striker is not an easy job," said the Lions of the North marksman.

"You can miss the ball on the line, but the important thing is how you fall and pick yourself up. That's what I did."
