SAFPU to challenge Chiefs dismissals

Cape Town - The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) has revealed that they have been approached by several players who were affected by the clear-out at Kaizer Chiefs.

Amakhosi released a total of 20 players with immediate effect on Tuesday as they look to completely revamp their squad in preparation for next season.

The list also included players whose contracts have been terminated or have been put on the transfer list.

According to the Union, some of the players believe their deals were cancelled without a valid reason and are now looking for representation to help them challenge the decision.

"I've never heard of a club sacking 20 players at a go, this doesn't make any sense," SAFPU general secretary Thulaganyo Gaoshubelwe told The Sowetan.

"We have received calls from some of the affected players and we'll be meeting them to seek a way forward.

"Complaints are that the club did not consult with them when taking this drastic decision. Surely they are in breach of players' contracts?

"How do you release a player from contract without engaging them first? When a player signs a contract, it is binding to both parties. If it's for three years, a player makes plans for that period.

"But if a club decides to end it, then they must agree to pay a portion of the remaining contract. There's nothing wrong with putting a player on transfer, but he must still be allowed to report for duty and get paid as per normal until he's sold to another club.

"But unfortunately in SA, it's rife for teams to do what Chiefs did. You find that players accept this kind of treatment out of desperation. They don't know their rights. Others come to us and by the time the case is resolved, he's already broke and in the end accepts a meagre settlement."
