Cape Town - Orlando Pirates interim coach Rulani Mokwena has praised Tshegofatso Mabasa, saying the striker has the potential to be an international player in the future.

The 22-year-old Mabasa, who joined the Buccaneers from Bloemfontein Celtic before the start of the current campaign, scored his first goals for the Soweto giants last weekend as he netted a brace as they beat Chippa United 2-1 at the Orlando Stadium.

Mokwena believes Mabasa has the necessary qualities to be a regular starter in the Bafana team in the future but also cautioned that player must not be rushed into the national team.

According to quotes published in KickOff, Mokwena said: "Top boy; top human being. I don't want to even talk about his football qualities, I think that was there for everybody to see (against Chippa).

"But he's a top human being, an extremely intelligent boy who is coachable and with a lot of potential.

"He's still not ready hey, he needs a lot of humility and to keep his feet grounded.

"But he's got a bright future, and the good thing is that he's South African because for a long time we haven't seen a good South African striker coming through.

"And the boy shows a lot of promise, and hopefully he can be the solution to assist this country in terms of producing top strikers."

Mokwena will hope Mabasa can keep his sparkling form when Pirates take on Bidvest Wits in an Absa Premiership clash on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 20:15.
