Cape Town - Polokwane City recorded a massively important three points in their battle for Absa Premiership survival with a 2-0 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday.

It was a relatively even start to this game with Patrick Tignyemb first to taste some action with an early punch clear from Puleng Tlolane's left-footed volley after a good flowing Polokwane build-up.

Lucky Baloyi was off-target with his shot from range at the other end ahead of a couple of corners for the visiting side.

Deon Hotto was then wide as Celtic pressed forward, but it was City who broke the deadlock with just 31 minutes played, with Thabiso Semenya scoring his first goal with a slotted finish, having picked up a Phiri pass in behind the Celtic defence.

Ronald Pfumbidzai failed to trouble George Chigova as Celtic responded but Rise and Shine were soon two goals ahead, on 39 minutes.

Sikhosana looked to have claimed the effort that will seemingly go down as an own-goal to Tignyemb, following a corner.

Dominic Chungwa headed just wide of the left upright as Polokwane threatened to run away with this tie, only for Celtic to respond through a Mbhazima Rikhotso effort that flew off target.

Victor Letsoalo came on to add some bite to the Celtic attack and came close with a header on 54 minutes as Tlolane saw his low drive well saved by Tignyemb.

City lost Sikhosana to a second yellow card with 63 minutes played to add some fresh momentum to Celtic.

Tlou Molekwane and Lantshene Phalane both had shots off target though as City held firm to claim an important win to ease their relegation fears.
