Riekerink: CT City must go back to basics

Cape Town - Cape Town City coach Jan Olde Riekerink believes it would benefit the team greatly if they focused on getting the basics right against Chippa United on Saturday.

The Citizens have endured a tumultuous campaign thus far, which sees them down in 11th position in the Absa Premiership standings, and Riekerink is eager to get the team out of their slump by getting the players to focus on fundamentals.

"We need to play in a structure but one that offers the ability to be creative," he said, as quoted by IOL.

"I believe in individual qualities but also playing together. We need to get the basics right first but we can work on that.

"We can concentrate on the creativity once we know the basics."

City captain Thami Mkhize says the squad have reacted positively to the appointment of Riekerink, who took over from sacked coach Benni McCarthy last month, and he is determined to clinch a win over Chippa.

"Ever since the coach has come in the players have responded positively and they are willing to change our situation in the team," said Mkhize.

"We played well against Celtic and Highlands, created chances but couldn't win the games.

"We can only take away the positives on how we played the games and are also looking forward to playing the Chilli Boys and hopefully we can get the win.

"But they are always tough to play against as our past results suggest."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
