Sundowns overcame National First Division side Highlands Park 1-0 after extra time to book their place in the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup, while their most recent outing was a 1-1 draw away to AC Leopards of the Congo, a result which saw them advance into the final preliminary knockout round of the CAF Champions League.

United crushed lower league side Sibanye Golden Stars 4-0 to advance into the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup, while their most recent outing in the National First Division saw them claim a 1-0 away win over Thanda Royal Zulu.

Nedbank Cup pedigree

It was their fourth triumph in the Nedbank Cup, having also won the competition in 1986, 1998 and 2008. They were also beaten finalists in 2012, 2007, 2001, 2000 and 1989.

Mbombela United are competing in the Nedbank Cup for the third time. Their debut in the last 32 of the competition arrived in 2013 when they were beaten by Vasco da Gama. The following year they narrowly lost 4-3 to Moroka Swallows at the same stage of the competition.
