Pitso prioritising continental success over domestic glory

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has made it clear that defending his side's CAF Champions League trophy is more important than winning the domestic league again.

The Pretoria side are three points behind Bidvest Wits in the South African league title race, which has just two games to go.

In Africa, Sundowns began their CAF Champions League group stage campaign with a 0-0 home draw against Ethiopian side Saint George on the weekend.

Speaking to the CAF websiteMosimane made it clear where his priorities lie, although he'll no doubt still be hoping that his side can pip the Clever Boys to maintain their domestic title as well.

"Rather than winning the league and Nedbank Cup, I would rather win the CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup. Domestically we might not win anything but we can go to the FIFA Club World Cup in December, that for me is history for Sundowns," he said.

He admits though that the Brazilians are going to have many hurdles to clear on the continent and that their status as champions will make it even harder.

"It is going to be very tough. In fact, it will be even tougher considering the fact that most clubs know who Sundowns is.

"We have the experience now and know what is needed to get positive results out of such matches. We have the quality and depth and will take it one game at a time – just as we did last year."

Next up for Sundowns is a home league clash with Maritzburg United this Wednesday, followed by a trip to play DRC side AS Vita Club the following Tuesday. Their final league game is away to Highlands Park on May 27.

Kick off is at 19:30.
