'Pitso has a promise to keep', says Hlompho Kekana

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana has told Pitso Mosimane to uphold his promise of "making history with the team" by signing a new contract.

Mosimane has less than a year left on his contract and in June revealed that he turned down a lucrative offer to sign with a Qatari club.

The Masandawana mentor said at the time that if he was interested in earning more money, he would have left Chloorkop a long time ago.

"I am at Sundowns because I want to be at Sundowns," said Mosimane.

"I am not at Sundowns because I can't get more somewhere. And if it was like that, I'd have long made good money. Maybe I am stupid, and I don’t understand the business side, but I just do what I like and love, and I am happy at Sundowns, for now.

"I am not stupid, knowing that I can get more. I am saying that because I've been approached. And I didn’t jump because I want to honour my contract at Sundowns. I don’t hold the team to ransom by saying 'you see what the people of Qatar want to give me, so also give me or else I am going to Qatar'. I’ve never done that, and I am not going to."

Mosimane said that he is still traumatised by his last experience coaching Bafana Bafana and for this reason would probably not return to the helm of the national team, despite SAFA looking for a permanent replacement for Stuart Baxter.

"I have a contract here. And I don’t know if I can do that (go back as Bafana coach). The last time we did that (appointed as Bafana coach), it didn’t go well with me," Mosimane said.

And Kekana has reminded Mosimane that he has a promise to keep as the midfielder only signed a new contract in the knowledge that Mosimane would be his coach during that time.

"He has to renew because he made a promise back in the day that we are going to make history together at Sundowns and I remember when was negotiating my contract some years ago, he said 'you have to stay here KK' because we are going to achieve more," said Kekana.

"I urge him to remember his words that we are going to make history with this team. He must stay and, I, in particular, love working with the coach because he drives us as players to always look forward to new challenges. So, he must not forget his words."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
