Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane believes star forward Percy Tau deserves to be the Absa Premiership Footballer of the Year due to his influence on big matches.
The Bafana Bafana international is in terrific form having banged home eights goals and made nine assists in all competitions. His performances have helped propel the Brazilians to a healthy lead in the league and the club are still in contention for the Nedbank Cup.
Nonetheless, while Mosimane takes the view that the 23-year-old deserves the gong, he says there could be criteria that swings it in favour of other players.
Speaking to Kickoff.com, the 53-year-old said: "I think his assists and goals and the way his plays at this point in time, I think it puts him in a good position to win footballer of the year because he is doing it week in and week out.
"It depends on the criteria. If the criteria is goals then it’s [Rodney] Ramagalela. If the criteria is about assists, then it’s Percy. If the criteria is about influencing big games and lots of games, then it’s Percy. He has been involved in many goals."
He added that Oscarine Masuluke not winning the Goal of the Season last year indicated that the voting of the fans can influence the outcome as well, saying: "I have seen Masuluke going to London for the (Puskas) awards, but he got no award at home.
"Those things are possible, so don’t jump the gun. ‘Shabba’’s [Siphiwe Tshabalala] goal won it and the guy when to the Oscars. But it’s okay, it’s part of football."
