Pirates legend demands future CAF success

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates legend Edward 'Magents' Motale says he wants to see Orlando Pirates competing in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup in the near future.

The Sea Robbers last appeared in the final of both competitions in recent times with the club losing the CCL and CCC finals to Al Ahly and Étoile du Sahel in 2013 and 2015 respectively.

Bucs, alongside Mamelodi Sundowns who won it in 2016, are the only South African sides to have won on the continent with Motale captaining the Pirates side that famously won the Champions League in 1995.

Speaking to Phakaaathi, he said: "We know that when Pirates are playing in the continent, they always go all out and wholeheartedly and their games are always entertaining.

"The likes of TP Mazembe, Zamalek and the other powerhouses of the continent know that when Pirates are coming, they need to pull up their socks and double their efforts. That is one factor that I like about Pirates.

"Pirates don’t just go there to increase numbers, they take it seriously and that also puts South Africa on the map and it also helps the national team to be stronger like we see with Sundowns – most of their players are selected for the national side."

The Buccaneers next travel to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to face Chippa United in an Absa Premiership clash on Sunday February 25.

Kick-off is at 15:30.
