Pirates a 150kg sumo wrestler, says Komphela

Cape Town - Golden Arrows coach Steve Komphela has compared Orlando Pirates to a 150-kilogram sumo wrestler and says a counter-attacking system is best against them.

Arrows held the Sea Robbers to a 0-0 draw in a Premiership clash on Wednesday night. Komphela's men managed to frustrate Bucs' talented attack and it ended all square at Orlando Stadium.

Nonetheless, the former Kaizer Chiefs mentor believes it is unwise to take on such a talented side while playing on the front foot.

Speaking after the game, he told reporters: "Very tactical. We had to control the match in a way that Pirates would not have liked.

"When you’re wrestling, you playing sumo, and this guy is 150kg, you can't go against them, so you need to invent a strategy to invite them in.

"We needed to deny any speed to utilise and no space to advance. But there was a lot of workload on our three midfielders. We had to keep our wing-backs deep. A lot of energy was spent. We are happy with the point. I think we could have also gotten a goal."

Arrows are next in action on 14 September when they take on AmaZulu at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Durban.

Kick-off is at 15:00.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
