Phiri relishing return to Abafana Bes'thende's ranks

Cape Town - Golden Arrows central midfielder Danny Phiri says he is happy to be back from a serious Achilles injury and is working hard on his match fitness.

The Zimbabwe international started the 2017/18 season on a rocky note after he was sent off in the MTN8 quarter-finals against Bidvest Wits in August 2017.

He then was unfortunate as he ruptured his Achilles at training in September last year, and was ruled out of action for at least seven months.

As such, coach Clinton Larsen decided to bring in free agent Sandile Zuke as cover for Phiri in January. The 29-year-old has missed a substantial 29 matches in all competitions in the current campaign, but did make a return to the fold recently.

The Warriors star came off the bench in the 3-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs on April 24, as he replaced Zuke at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban.

He then played the full 90 minutes in the 3-2 victory over Platinum Stars on April 28. With that said, the player revealed he is delighted to be back in contention.

Phiri told Kickoff: "It is nice to be back and to be with the guys, it is very important. I'm trying to make sure that I get my fitness back. That is the most important thing right now and helping the team.

"I'm coming back at a crucial time. We needed these three points as you know we were in the play-offs spot, so we needed the win."

Larsen's side will conclude their season against high-flying neighbours Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium on May 12.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
