Pelembe: We are happy as a team

Johannesburg - Bidvest Wits attacking midfielder Elias Pelembe insists that the Students were delighted following their 2-1 triumph over Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday.

The Clever Boys got off to a flying start in the 2016/17 Absa Premiership season after causing an upset over the Soweto giants in an entertaining clash played at the Bidvest Stadium.

The Mozambican international was on target alongside Thulani Hlatswayo for Wits while Chiefs grabbed a consolation goal thanks to Lorenzo Gordinho.

Notably, it was the first time Chiefs lost the opening round of the league since 2008.

'Dominguez' as Pelembe is affectionately known, said that it was significant for the Clever Boys to collect maximum points in their first game and they intend to keep the momentum going.

"The coach (Gavin Hunt) told us that we’ll be playing a big game but we must not forget to enjoy ourselves,” Pelembe said.

"I tried to enjoy it; everyone in the team enjoyed themselves throughout the game.

"But most importantly it was a win that we enjoyed most because the first league game is always important every season.

"Because it could either break or make you, so we are happy to win the first one and it boosted our confidence.

"It’s so good to start by winning and I wish we can keep this momentum for the remainder of the season.

"It’s still early days I know but we are happy as a team.”

Wits will now shift the focus to their upcoming MTN8 quarter-final clash against Orlando Pirates on Saturday while Amakhosi will be hoping to bounce back when they face Cape Town City on Friday.
