Palacios: Don't forget Ovono

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates head of development Augusto Palacios has urged the club not to forget Felipe Ovono, even though the Equatoguinean is now playing second fiddle to Brighton Mhlongo.

The 22-year-old has fallen out of favour since Mhlongo returned from the long-term injury lay-off, and was used several times by Palacios in the recently concluded MultiChoice Diski Challenge.

The former Deportivo Mongomo custodian was on the bench when the Buccaneers beat Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 in the Nedbank Cup Tound of 32 at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

"He is a national player and you can't have doubts about his abilities," Palacios, the ex-Pirates coach, said.

"At the end of the day, he plays for his national team.

"He is 22 and has a bright future although he is not playing. He has a good attitude even for the MultiChoice Diski Challenge.

"Having said, I'm happy with him and he was the man of the match in a Reserve League derby match. You can see he is an international player."

Ovono, who speaks the same language as Palacios, which is Spanish, only joined the club at the start of the season.

He has played five times in the Absa Premiership and was a central figure for the Bucs in their CAF Confederation Cup campaign last year.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
