Onyango apologises for costly howler against Polokwane

Cape Town - Denis Onyango apologised for his costly error when conceding a soft goal as Mamelodi Sundowns missed a chance to go top after being held to a 1-1 draw by Polokwane City on Tuesday evening.

The Ugandan 2016 Africa-based Footballer of the Year appeared to have a glancing header from Zambian Salulani Phiri in his grasp during first-half stoppage-time.

But 33-year-old Onyango let the ball slip from his hands and pushed it into the net with his left foot to concede an embarrassing and costly own goal at Loftus Versfeld.

Onyango admitted that he has been affected by a knee injury but said that his error was due to a lack of concentration at a key moment in the game.

"I have to apologise for my error," Onyango said. "The coach keeps believing in me and I keep making the mistakes."

Sundowns next face a top-of-the-table clash when they face leaders Bidvest Wits on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 18:00.
