Cape Town - Highlands Park have confirmed the acquisition of former Orlando Pirates midfielder Musa Nyatama on a six-month deal.

Nyatama was released by the Buccaneers on transfer deadline day, a decision which came as a surprise to many given his impressive form over the past two seasons for the Soweto giants, which saw the 32-year-old win the club's Player of the Year award in the 2017/18 campaign.

While off-season signing Fortune Makaringe has established himself in Nyatama's position, there are worries that the Sea Robbers won't have enough depth should the former Maritzburg United play-maker get injured.

Pirates legend Thabo Mngomeni criticised the club's decision to let the experienced midfielder go, saying it was baffling how new coach Josef Zinnbauer could come to such a hasty decision in just his seven weeks in charge.

Nevertheless, Pirates' loss appears to be Highlands gain, who have got themselves a highly experienced and technical player.

Highlands Park club director Sinky Mnisi confirmed the news of Nyatama's arrival in Thembisa.

“That’s correct…it’s a deal until the end of the season," Mnisi told FarPost.

According to a statement released by Pirates, Nyatama had asked to leave the club as he was frustrated with a lack of regular first-team football.

The Daveyton-born midfield general adds depth to the centre of park for Owen da Gama and will compete with the likes of Mothobi Mvala and Reneilwe Letsholonyane for a first-team berth.

And Nyatama could make his debut as soon as Saturday evening when the Lions of the North clash with GladAfrica Championship outfit Uthongathi FC in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32.

Kick-off is at 20:15.
