Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates defender Innocent Maela is expected to make a relatively speedy recovery from the injury he picked up on national team duty.

The 25-year-old, a nominee for Absa PSL Defender of the Season, was forced through an unspecified injury to pull out of the Bafana Bafana side just before their match against Madagascar in the COSAFA Cup, which was lost on penalties.

According to a Soccer Laduma source, the extent of Maela's injury is not cause for too much concern.

"There shouldn't be any major worries as it doesn't seem to be a very bad one. He should be fine for the start of the new season," said the source.

The former Thanda Royal Zulu left-back meanwhile took to Twitter to declare his determination to bounce back.

"What defines us is how well we rise after we fall. #Roadtorecovery #Injuries makes us stronger #Godfirst."

Maela, who has two international caps to his name, played in 26 games for Pirates last season in league and cup.
