Mzimela ensures Dikwena progress in CAF Confed Cup

Cape Town - Platinum Stars overcame a first-leg deficit against Vipers SC to progress to the play-off round of the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup with a 3-2 aggregate scoreline after beating the Ugandan side 3-1 on Saturday in the second-leg.

Dikwena made the perfect start to the match when goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela buried a second minute penalty. Benson Shilongo was upended in the box and the 'keeper confidently slotted his kick.

Ndumiso Mabena then added a second for his side on the night, in the 33rd minute, with a super free-kick to put Stars ahead on aggregate going into the half-time break.

Despite Vipers pulling a goal back in the 55th minute through Militon Karisa, who had netted his side's goal in the first game, Mzimela stepped up in injury time at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium to fire his side into the next round of the competition with a second penalty.

Robert Ng'ambi was dismissed later on in the tie for picking up two yellow cards, and will subsequently miss the next game.

Stars will now go into the play-off round where the winners of the Confederation Cup first round are drawn against the losers of the Champions League first round, with the teams from the Confederation Cup hosting the second-leg.
