Motaung vows to stand by Komphela

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs boss Kaizer Motaung has come out in support of the club's coach, Steve Komphela, saying that he doesn't regret hiring him to replace Stuart Baxter.

Komphela had a tough act to follow from Baxter, who had led Amakhosi to a record-breaking season. But Komphela broke records that the club wouldn't want to be associated with - a four-match losing run where they didn't find the back of the net once.

That's worse than what Doctor Khumalo and Ace Khuse did when they led the club in the interim after the sacking of Vladimir Vermezovic. In their four-match losing streak the pair saw Amakhosi score twice.

"There are no regrets," Motaung said. "You remember when Baxter came, we made wholesale of changes in the team. We won the league that season but in the following season he didn't win anything. But there was no noise because he had a good start.

"I don't think that we should judge Steve by only this scenario. We can judge him from next season and onwards when he has had more time to tweak the team the way he wants it.

"You need to have guts (as a head coach). You also need to use your head. If you're a chairman of a team you must be a leader. A leader must not be lost in the crowd."

The key to Baxter's success was the top players Chiefs signed for him, practically buying a back-four of Bafana Bafana players. Komphela didn't have such luck with an aging squad. Motaung promised to change that next season.

"We have an aging squad and players that we brought in," Motaung added. "We will look to replenish the squad and bring more players next season.

"It won't be a wholesale of changes like we did when Baxter came, we bought about eight new players. We will tweak the squad and make sure that we get it right."
