Mosimane keen to revisit 'CBD' strategy

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane says he is looking to recreate the much-vaunted 'CBD' attacking trident after securing the services of striker Mauricio Affonso.

The trio of Leonardo Castro, Khama Billiat and Keagan Dolly took the Premiership by storm a few years ago, helping Downs claim plenty of silverware during a hugely successful spell.

However, with the trio having since moved on to new clubs, both locally and abroad, Mosimane is keen to create another devastating attacking trio, capable of striking fear into the hearts of opposition of defenders.

And, with the lanky Affonso now on the club's books, Mosimane has a real number nine to deploy, with Sundowns having played much of last season without an out-and-out striker.

"We had a number nine before, Leonardo Castro. He adapted well. I think you remember the CBD," Mosimane is quoted as saying by The Citizen.

"I want to go and try to revisit the same strategy and find out if he can help us. We won the league with 71 points plus 51 or 53 goals [using that system].

"We won the CAF Champions League, we won the Telkom Knockout Cup, the team went to the [FIFA Club] World Cup. Hopefully, we can get the same."

He added: "We don't have a player of his style and ability. I believe it is important for the Champions League.

"The important thing is to see how he will fit in the style and the way we play because Sundowns is a complex team. Sundowns can play the whole season without a striker and still play.

"We brought him as a number nine."
