Mosimane: I’m not in a popularity contest

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane is not concerned about being the most liked coach in the country, saying he is not in a popularity contest.

Mosimane recently had some strong words for football analysts, who nominated other players ahead of Percy Tau in the race for the Absa Premiership Player of the Year award.

The Sundowns mentor admitted that football is a game of emotions, but stated that all he is concerned about is winning trophies for his club.

Mosimane told Supersport Backpages: "I'm more concerned of the yellow nation, when they sing, when they call me, the sing songs, they have got songs about me.

"I see (Tiyani) Mabunda and Percy, they are leading the songs. I have got the board; I have got the players on my side.

"We can determine the results; we know we can go anywhere else and win. That’s for me the ultimate.

"I do not want to be in a popular contest of being the most liked guy, but who lost many games or the most humble guy who does not win.

"My game, football is about winning. I was so emotional with Arsene Wenger’s send-off. I said, I mean, 22-years. I was so emotional when they were going around. I said, wow. This is what football is all about. Alex Ferguson, 26-years and all that."

Mosimane feels every coach has his own way of doing things and compared his situation to that of Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, who despite winning a lot of trophies, still gets criticised for being outspoken.

Mosimane added: "Wenger also his own ways of handling. He never accepted when Arsenal is wrong. Never, and not even once.

"Mourinho, Pep Guardiola. I’m not saying I’m in their space, I’m just saying those guys have done so well and Mourinho is also not the most liked ones. But you can see he has 26 trophies.

"So they are those who are most liked and they do not win. I want the opposite. I’m not in a popularity contest. I don’t want to be the so called role model, maybe I'm not."
