Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has once again risked the wrath of the PSL after commenting on the performance of referee Abongile Tom.
Mosimane was less than impressed with Tom's performance during Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Polokwane City, saying he felt the young referee was too eager to use his whistle.
However, despite being critical of the referee's showing on the day, Mosimane has backed Tom to improve as he gains more experience in the Absa Premiership.
"He is a young referee. He needs to get games like this to improve," Mosimane is quoted as saying by KickOff.
"There were a little bit of fouls that he gave in the first half more on Polokwane City because the game was congested in the midfield with Jabu [Maluleke] playing on tight angles, one-twos, sometimes he falls and they got fouls there.
"If it's Champions league it's a totally different game.
"Like [Victor] Hlongwane, you know that he lets the smaller things go, he lets the game go, but this one [Abongile Tom] is whistle-happy... tswiri tswiri every minute. I mean really. I don't say it's not fouls but he loves the whistle.
"He stops the game so many times. He is whistle-happy. He is happy to blow. Anyways, let's give him a chance to grow," he concluded.
Next up for Sundowns is a top-of-the-table clash with Bidvest Wits on Saturday evening. The two teams are separated by just two points in the league standings, although the second-placed Downs do have two games in hand.
