Morris: I'm here to help the team

Cape Town - Tashreeq Morris is back with a bang, scoring an early opening goal in Ajax Cape Town’s 3-1 victory over SuperSport United, in what was his first start since his return from the long-term knee injury which kept him out of action since May 2015.

The 21-year-old forward, who finished 2014/15 as the club’s top goal scorer, suffered a serious knee injury in last season’s Nedbank Cup final against Mamelodi Sundowns. But, ‘Tassie’ is back to his usual best as he was instrumental in the Urban Warriors’ win over Matsatsantsa.

"Coming back from this injury and going straight into the first eleven is a big achievement in itself. Credit has to go to the medical team - Jantho, Nicole and Michele who all helped me recover and get back onto the pitch," said Morris on the club's website.

"Also credit has to go to the coach for showing that amount of confidence in me, playing me straight away when we were given the go-ahead from the doctor. It’s really a great feeling coming back and being placed straight into the first eleven. The way it seems is that the coach has been waiting on me to recover to play me again, that means a lot to me."

"One of the things a player would want most after coming from a long injury lay off is to score, I’m so happy that it came so early for me. I will continue to try hard every time I play not only to score but to do whatever I can to help the team win. It’s been tough at times for the team, but we are fighting hard to get points from every match and I think we are starting to get things right again," added Morris.

Head coach Roger De Sa also had his say on Moriss’ return to the side, explaining how much of a difference he has seen in Tassie from last season compared to now.

"He’s looking good, and I knew we would see a new Tassie with about 5kg of muscle added to that athletic build of his, and we couldn’t wait to see him back.

"I think he’s put on weight in the right areas, and has bulked up a little bit…A year ago when he got injured, he was a little boy, a youngster and he was taking a lot of knocks, but a very brave kid. I think he’s come back now looking like a man, and I think that is what will make a difference in his performances," commented De Sa.

Morris and his team-mates will be in action once again Wednesday evening at 19:30 as they take on Mpumalanga Black Aces at Athlone Stadium.
