Former Orlando Pirates head coach Rulani Mokwena says he is eager to make his mark at Chippa United by helping them avoid relegation.

The 35-year-old tactician has taken over at the Chilli Boys until the end of the season, following the departure of Norman Mapeza this week.

Mokwena expressed his gratitude to Pirates boss Dr Irvin Khoza for the opportunities he was afforded at the Soweto giants.

Now the promising young coach is excited to take on a new challenge - leading Chippa to Absa Premiership survival.

"Firstly, I would like to thank the chairman of Orlando Pirates for giving me the opportunity to coach his club, also to thank the players and the technical team for all their hard work and the supporters for always believing in me," said Mokwena in a statement released by his agency.

"I now look forward to starting this new chapter in my career, to getting back on the field and helping Chippa retain their top-flight status."

Chippa are 11th in the Absa Premiership but are only five points clear of the relegation zone with seven games left to play.

They next face Wits in an Absa Premiership clash on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 20:15.
