Mokoena moves into senior role

Cape Town - New Ajax Cape Town winger Lebohang Mokoena has accepted his role as an elder statesman in a youthful Urban Warriors outfit.

The 29-year-old was once a young prodigy when he made his debut for Orlando Pirates little over 12 years ago.

Mokoena will be among the experienced campaigners at the club, alongside Nathan Paulse, Erwin Isaacs and Mark Mayambela.

Mokoena parted ways with Mamelodi Sundowns, having spent seven years at the club after joining from Pirates.

"It's a different chapter and environment for me. I just need a little bit of time to adjust and get to know the guys, but everything is going well thus far," Mokoena told the Sowetan.

"I see my role as guiding the boys in the right direction and make them believe that playing in the PSL is not about age. So when you are out there in the field, you are no longer a child.

"This is a great opportunity for them to step up and lift their hands and say, 'we are in the PSL to stay'. So it is quite encouraging to hear some of them speak, because they are so inspired.

"Right now we are just trying to bring back my confidence to get me up there to help the team."
