Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp wants his side to adopt a more aggressive approach and focus on playing 'shoe-shine' football.
Diski style football has for long been what the fans have called for in South Africa, a flair-based game with tricks aplenty, quick one-twos characterised by fastball circulation.
Chiefs fans are particularly keen on seeing their side play in this manner, but Middendorp believes it mustn't be at the expense of results.
"We can’t go into [the season] – not at this time, probably how it happened 10 or 20 years ago, when you did your shoe-shine stuff – this is not soccer anymore," said the Amakhosi mentor.
"We have already experienced it – if teams are coming at you one-against-one the entire time, and you stand there without being prepared to be a man in this direction…"
The 60-year-old wants his side to adopt a more aggressive approach and suggested that they were outmuscled too many times last season.
"We have a certain style, there’s no doubt about it. We will not have quick-fast combination and ball circulation but, as I said, we are on the way to prepare ourselves to be more competitive,” he stated.
"It’s not about being only aggressive, but it [aggression] belongs to a soccer game, so let’s go to be involved in man-sport."
Amakhosi travel to Tembisa on Sunday, August 4 for their opening Absa Premiership clash against Highlands Park.
Kick-off is at 15:00.
