Middendorp to give Fileccia more time

Cape Town - Maritzburg United coach Ernst Middendorp says recovering striker Andrea Fileccia needs more time get back to full fitness.

The Belgian returned to training on Monday, having recently aggravated the serious knee injury he suffered whilst on the books of Free State Stars last season.

While is now back in first-team training, Fileccia will have to improve his fitness levels before he is considered for selection by Middendorp.

"He started on Monday and he’s out of form and there’s no chance for him to play this weekend. At the moment he's definitely in need of another three to four weeks," Middendorp told KickOff.

"He started training on Monday and he’s going a different route at the moment, regarding treatment and regarding whatever - but at the moment he can't play.

"I was thinking going into the international break he was looking good from the therapy but it's definitely not possible for him to play. He’s not fit for training and he’s out for another treatment and that's it."

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
