Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has insisted that Daniel Akpeyi remains the club's first-choice goalkeeper in the Absa Premiership despite his error in the 1-1 draw with Polokwane.
The goalkeeper's position has been somewhat problematic for Amakhosi in the second half of the season, after first-choice stopper Itumeleng Khune sustained a season-ending injury in January.
Virgil Vries was handed the chance to impress but committed a series of high-profile errors, leading to Akpeyi taking over between the sticks.
While fresh doubts have been raised after Amakhosi's most recent game, Middendorp has no plans to bring Vries back into the fold just yet.
When asked if he was considering changing his goalkeeper for the clash with Highalnds Park on the weekend, Middendorp told KickOff.com: "No, it's not about [the one mistake].
"We'll observe it during the week, and we have the next game on the weekend [against Highlands Park], and then we will see.
"Actually, it's not fooling around – Daniel is the goalkeeper in the league and Bruce [Bvuma] is playing the Nedbank Cup, that's where we are standing at the moment.
"You'll understand, please, that at the time directly after a game I can confirm it."
