Middendorp lambasts Chiefs' 'half-hearted' performance

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp said his side not possess the right attitude in their 1-0 defeat to Baroka at FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

Chiefs were a completely different beast from the side that shone in the 2-0 Nedbank Cup quarter-final victory over Cape Town City last weekend.

And Middendorp said his side's performance was 'half-hearted' and lacked the urgency they showed last weekend, despite fielding virtually the same team.

"We saw two totally different games from the same players," Middendorp told SuperSport TV.

"We had nearly the same starting XI from last week, where we saw a fantastic performance. We had the attitude and hunger and we spoke about it the whole week that we can't let our guard down this week.

"When you are playing teams that are fighting for survival, you can't be half-hearted and that's what we were. We didn't have the right attitude and didn't play the soccer game we are capable of playing.

"We need to take the right lesson from this defeat. Just because we had a fantastic game last weekend, doesn't mean everything is in place."

Chiefs clash with Chippa United in the Nedbank Cup semi-final next weekend and then travel to Thohoyandou to face Black Leopards in the middle of next week.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
