Middendorp: It's not lack of commitment

Cape Town - Maritzburg United coach Ernst Middendorp is confident his side are giving their all in the battle against relegation, but says they must increase their focus.

Goal-scoring has not been a major issue for the Team of Choice this season - of the bottom six clubs on the table, they have scored the most goals (31).

But their goals conceded tally is the worst in the league - 52, too often the KZN outfit having lost focus or made careless mistakes to give away soft goals.

"If you see that game with the way we lost it, we should have done much better," KickOff quoted Middendorp as saying of the 2-1 defeat to SuperSport United last week.

"There are mistakes in certain moments. I will not stand here and say it's a lack of commitment as it's definitely not. We just get lost in certain moments and that is definitely how it goes probably until the end of the season."

Maritzburg have three games left this term, including Saturday's encounter away to Orlando Pirates in Soweto.

University of Pretoria and Jomo Cosmos each have two games left and are one and five points respectively above Middendorp's men.

"I look at it game-to-game and that is what we have to do. We need maximum points against Pirates," added Middendorp.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
