Cape Town - Free State Stars' pursuit of Ernst Middendorp to take over from Luc Eymael could be de-railed as the German could only reportedly be available in January.
Eymael parted ways with Ea Lla Koto recently after a poor run of form and has since taken charge of Egyptian Premier League side El Geish on a short-term contract.
Nonetheless, reports emerged that Stars were chasing Middendorp who has been in charge previously with the Free State-based outfit.
The German is currently with Bangkok United in Thailand as their technical director but is seemingly contracted to that side until at least January 2019.
According to a Soccer Laduma website source, the move may fall through.
The publication's source said: "So far, Free State Stars have been unsuccessful in their pursuit of Ernst Middendorp for a return to the club.
"The club has been told that the coach may only be available in January. They are likely to assess other options."
Stars may have to appoint another coach from elsewhere as they have three matches to play in 2018 in both the CAF Confederations Cup as well as the Absa Premiership.
