Cape Town - Platinum Stars rode their luck as Ajax Cape Town hit the woodwork twice, but they hung on to win 1-0 courtesy of a Vuyo Mere strike.
It was a tight first 20 minutes with both teams struggling to create chances in the early exchanges, as the respective defences kept it tight.
However, Stars captain Mere had a decent chance to make it 1-0 after the 20-minute mark, though his volley failed to trouble Jody February in goal.
It remained close until the stroke of half-time as Roscoe Pietersen saw his header hit the post, with Dino Visser in goal scrambling.
After the break, Mere did give the hosts the lead when he curled in a superb free-kick after a foul was committed by the visitors on the edge of the box.
Soon after, Dikwena went close again as Brian Mwila nearly connected with Robert Ng'ambi's cross. The same player then forced a save from February as Dikwena continued to threaten.
Sedwyn George forced a save from Visser with just over 15 minutes to go. Nonetheless, in the last 10 minutes Katlego Otladisa nearly made it 2-0 but February pulled off a fine save.
It wasn't to be the Urban Warriors' night as Nxumalo once again hit the woodwork in the 90th minute, as Roger de Sa's men recorded their first win of the season.
