Mere uncertain of Bidvest Wits future

Cape Town - Bidvest Wits right back Vuyo Mere is unsure if his contract will be renewed with the Clever Boys for the 2019/20 campaign.

The former Platinum Stars defender signed for Wits last season on a one year deal with an option for another season.

The veteran was a solid performer for coach Gavin Hunt's team as he made 25 appearances in all competitions, despite turning 35 in March.

Fullbacks in South Africa's top flight often decline quickly after the age of 30 as they can't match the speed of more youthful wingers, however, Mere is yet to show signs of his advancing age.

The player has been a stalwart in the Premiership for close to 20 years as he made his debut back in 2001 for Hellenic.

Speaking to KickOff, he said: "I don't know yet. I signed for a season and the club has an option to renew. So no word has been said yet.

"I love football and God has blessed me with a pure heart and strong legs, so I want to continue praising my God with the talent He has blessed me with for as long as I can.

Meanwhile, Hunt refused to comment on the matter, saying: "I don't know because I'm still on holiday, so phone me (later) in June."
