Mere: 'Chiefs still favourites' despite 12 point deficit

Cape Town - Bidvest Wits right-back Vuyo Mere believes Kaizer Chiefs are a top quality side ahead of Wednesday's Premiership clash at Bidvest Stadium.

Chiefs trail the league leaders by 12 points in eighth place after 16 matches however Mere takes the view that underestimating the Glamour Boys could prove costly for the Clever Boys.

In their first league meeting in 2018/19, Wits won 3-1 and they are also unbeaten in their last three PSL games against the Soweto giants.

Speaking to Kickoff, the veteran defender said: "Nah, we are not favourites my brother.

"We still have the minority of supporters of the two teams and Chiefs will always be the favourites, and that's how we want it. We don't want unnecessary pressure because we already have pressure of maintaining the top spot on the log."

The 34-year-old added that Chiefs' performance in the recent 2-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns was largely positive and was further reason not to underestimate the Ernst Middendorp-coached outfit.

He concluded: "Chiefs is a big team with lots and lots of good players, they can turn things around at any time so we can't judge them with one game. They had their moments against Downs and they looked pretty good, so we can't afford to undermine them.

"We would all be at school or working in the corporate world if we didn't chase the league title, so yeah we are chasing the league title."

Wednesday's action is set to get underway from 19:30.
