Cape Town - Maritzburg United utility player Deolin Mekoa believes that he was played out of position at the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.
Mekoa was part of the under-23 team that represented South Africa but failed to make it out of the group stages.
Coach Owen de Gama opted to play him at fullback instead of in his usual position out wide.
"I'm natural winger so they played me left-back and the coach told me that he's going to use me in the left-back position at the start of the tournament," Mekoa told KickOff.
"And I told him I can play there but my best position is on the right wing. But having said that, I was one of the utility players and I can play anywhere.
"In the second game I played in the centre of midfield and the last game I played as the left-back. But yeah I did well I think because I can play in any position.
"I think we tried our best and I think you watched the games. You saw that we tried our best but we couldn't score.
"We tried to fight to qualify but unfortunately we didn't score and things didn't go our way."
Mekoa has since focused his attensions to club football where United to face Bloemfontein Celtic on August 24.
