Mayambela aiming for top eight spot by year end

Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town play-maker Mark Mayambela is hopeful his team can get into the top half of the Premiership table before the Christmas break.

The Urban Warriors went nine league matches without victory at the start of the season, but are currently on a run of three successive wins after beating Platinum Stars, Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows.

This sees Stanley Menzo's side in 11th position, and four points adrift of the top eight.

Still to come this year for the Cape side before the Christmas and AFCON break, are matches against Highlands Park, Bloemfontein Celtic and Chippa United, none of whom have been in great form this season.

Mayambela is therefore hopeful his side can end 2016 with a bang and force their way into the top eight.

"I think from a football point of view I would like to see the team climbing the league standings," he told the club's official website.

"It would be great for us to be in the top eight during the upcoming Christmas break.

"I believe that we have a good chance of achieving that. That's my wish."

Ajax coach Stanley Menzo has hailed his side's improving maturity after winning consecutive games but added that they should practice caution heading into their next fixture.

The Cape-based side next travel to the Makhulong Stadium where they will face former Ajax coach, Gordon Igesund's Highlands Park on Wednesday.

Kick off is at 19:30.
