Cape Town - Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Tsepo Masilela is urging caution regarding his former club's prospects this season even though they have made a perfect start to the league season.

Chiefs have won their opening two games in their Absa Premiership campaign, seeing off Highlands Park away from home before beating Black Leopards last weekend.

Amakhosi are enduring one of the worst trophy droughts in the club's history having gone four seasons without winning silverware but there is optimism at the Soweto club after their good start.

Masilela, who was at Chiefs when they last won a title in the 2014/15 season, says it is to early to judge if Chiefs can compete this campaign.

In quotes published on KickOff, Masilela said: "It's still early days.

"Maybe after five games you can have more of a picture of where they're going, but I can't say I'm seeing different or new things.

"Let them play and we'll see how it pans out."

When Masilela was asked what was the standout feature in the squad at Chiefs when he played five years ago, the defender said they had more leaders to guide the youngsters.

The left-back said the experienced trio of goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, forward Bernard Parker and midfielder Willard Katsande will be vital if the club want to get back to the glory days.

Masilela continued: "I don't know where to start but, with our generation, maybe we had more senior players and more leaders in that team.

"If you check, we had the likes of Morgan [Gould], Pa [Gaxa], Tefu [Mashamaite] - we had leaders.

"With this group they still have Bernard Parker, Willard Katsande, Itu Khune is there. So, it’s for them to try and help the youngsters to hit the ground running.

"But to say my generation was better than this, I would be lying. I don't want to compare generations, I'm not one to feel like it's my place to do that.

"Let's just wish the current team all the best and let them also enjoy their time and try to bring back the smiles to the supporters."
