Maritzburg return to winning ways

Cape Town - Maritzburg United continued their fine season as a goal in each half secured a 2-0 win over Baroka FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors took just eight minutes to make their mark as Bandile Shandu beat Ayanda Dlamini with a stunning strike from range that flew into the bottom corner of the net.

Andrea Fileccia threatened to take the game away from the Limpopo outfit when he steered a header wide of the target at the back post on 17 minutes, while Pogiso Sanoka went close nine minutes later with a headed effort from Deolin Mekoa's free-kick that was cleared off the line.

Maritzburg were caught offside on a number of occasions in the remainder of the first half as they looked to hit Baroka on the counter.

Half-time arrived without any further incident, but the KZN club were celebrating their second goal just two minutes after the restart when Siphesihle  Ndlovu curled the ball beyond Dlamini from outside the box.

The hosts looked to respond as Mathari Motupa directed a header wide of goal on 55 minutes, before Talent Chawapiwa cleared the crossbar with a firm strike.

Mekoa had a goal controversially ruled out for offside on 63 minutes, while at the other end Gift Motupa drew a superb save out of Richard Ofori with an acrobatic effort moments later.

United finished the contest strongly as Lebohang Maboe saw his shot tipped onto the woodwork by Dlamini in the 78th minute and Mohau Mokate fired a free-kick over the bar from the edge of the box nine minutes from time.
