Makua urges Amakhosi to 'fight as a team' in Soweto derby

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Frank Makua believes Amakhosi have the upper hand going into the Soweto derby but has urged his former team to play as a unit.

Amakhosi are currently sitting pretty at the top of the league table go into Saturday's clash at the FNB Stadium as clear favourites with Pirates still looking to find their feet this campaign.

Makua, who made 90 appearances for the Glamour Boys between 1995 and 2000, said in big matches such as the Soweto derby players could easily lose focus and want to shine as individuals.

In quotes published in the Sowetan, Makua said: "I know that current form counts for nothing in the Soweto derby but I think Chiefs have the upper hand.

"However, players must put their personal interests aside and fight as a team.

"In big games like this, players want to shine individually, to grab headlines.

"But I urge all our players to work collectively to make the Amakhosi faithful happy."

Makua also feels Dumisani Zuma deserves to start for Amakhosi, saying the winger is Chiefs' best player at the moment.

Zuma has impressed when coming off the bench this season and scored twice against Chippa United when he was given a rare start by coach Ernst Middendorp on Wednesday.

"Zuma is Chiefs' best player at the moment and he should start," said Makua. "You saw what he did against Chippa United."

Kick-off is at 15:30.
