Makola set for Orlando Pirates stay

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates are reportedly set to retain the services of veteran attacking midfielder Mpho Makola despite the fact he was out of favour in 2018/19.

Makola made just eight starts in all competitions as it appeared he was playing second string to the likes of the more influential Thembinkosi Lorch and Vincent Pule further forward.

As such, some were speculating that his seven-year stay at Mayfair may be coming to an end at the conclusion of the current campaign.

However, a source tells the Citizen that the 33-year-old could still have a future with the Sea Robbers as coach Milutin Sredojevic and his technical team believe he has a role to play in another busy campaign in 2019/20.

Bucs are set to be involved in the CAF Champions League once again and will need a strong squad to cope with the demands of domestic and continental football.

The source told the publication: "Makola is one of the most experienced players in the squad, and his experience is going to help the club very much.

"The club is going to compete in Africa again next season and you need players like Makola, who have been there.

"He might have stayed on the bench a lot last season, but he is still one of the top midfielders. He won't go anywhere, plus the coach wants to have a balanced squad next season."
