Cape Town - Kabelo Mahlasela's season could be over after Kaizer Chiefs announced their new signing will be sidelined for around four months with a knee injury.
The 26-year-old midfielder joined Amakhosi earlier this month from Premiership rivals Bloemfontein Celtic, only to suffer the injury in his first training session with Steve Komphela's side.
Komphela had initially hoped to hand Mahlasela his debut before the end of the current campaign, but that is looking increasingly unlikely with the announcement he's expected to be ruled out until May.
Chiefs broke the news on Twitter, saying: "Kabelo Mahlasela will be out of action for four months. The procedure to repair a tear in his meniscus inside the knee went well.
"Mahlasela incurred the freak injury in his first training with the team. We wish Mahlasela a speedy recovery."
