Letsholonyane: 'Kekana deal a repayment for what he has done for Sundowns'

Veteran Highlands Park midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane has lauded Mamelodi Sundowns after they handed a long-term contract to captain Hlompho Kekana.

The 34-year-old Kekana, who is the club captain, recently signed an unprecedented four-year deal with Masandawana, a club he has been with since 2012 and who he has helped win a total of nine major trophies.

While the new contract was just reward for the stalwart midfielder it is very rare for a South African club to offer long-term deals to players beyond the age of 30.

The now 37-year-old Letsholonyane himself showed similar loyalty to Kaizer Chiefs during his career but was not rewarded with a long-term contract and wishes he had been shown the same faith as Sundowns did to Kekana.

In quotes published on KickOff, 'Yeye' said: "It's a good deal. I think it's a repayment for what he has done for the club and what he has achieved while with the club, and I think he deserves everything coming his way.

"He's a good professional footballer and it's obviously every player's dream to spend as much time with the team that introduces you to the limelight, or rather gives you the platform to be a professional player and achieve a lot with that team.

"I think if I had the same opportunity years back, I would have grabbed it with both hands."

PSL chairperson Dr Irvin Khoza announced on Monday that the league has been suspended temporarily due the coronavirus outbreak.
