Cape Town - Orlando
Pirates legend Gavin Lane has lashed out at the club's players for not
showing enough fighting spirit and heart especially after losing 6-0 to
Mamelodi Sundowns.
The defender, who was a part of the famous class of 1995 who brought the CAF Champions League back to South Africa, told Soccer Laduma: "I didn’t get involved regarding the latest massacre that the guys had against Sundowns.
"A lot of the legends were getting ruffled, asking if we should go speak to the office, wondering if we as old players can’t go and speak to these youngsters, try help them out."
The 50-year-old added that he hoped the players had been given a wake up call by the new management installed at the club following some other poor performances this season.
Lane added: "If I’m a soccer player, all I want to do is play. I think some of these guys are just there for the joyride.
"And the players must take responsibility. They need to get their backsides whipped. You can’t just get chosen to play and then lose 6-0. The coach can’t lose the game 6-0 for you. You just can’t do that as a Pirates player."
Kjell Jonevret's men return to action when they face Free State Stars on Saturday in Orkney at the James Motlatsi Stadium.
The action gets underway from 18:00.
