Lakay eager to follow in Benni and Morris' footsteps

Cape Town - SuperSport United forward Fagrie Lakay says he is inspired by the likes of Bafana Bafana legends Benni McCarthy and Nasief Morris, who enjoyed success in Europe.

The former Santos star had a good spell with Ajax Cape Town last season on loan from SuperSport United, before returning to United under Kaitano Tembo in 2018/19.

The 21-year-old is becoming a key component of Tembo's side and is hopeful one day following in the footsteps of McCarthy and Morris in making the grade in Europe.

The former enjoyed spells for the likes of Ajax Amsterdam, Porto and Blackburn Rovers, whereas, the latter enjoyed arguably his best period with Panathanaikos in Greece.

He told KickOff website: "If you ask any young player where they want to play, their dream is to go overseas, and I am no different. For me it's just about working hard, and the opportunity will come.

"There's Benni McCarthy who played overseas, Nasief Morris as well. There are quite a few guys who come from similar places in Cape Town, so they motivated me. To see someone who comes from the same place as you, achieving that, then I believe that I can too.

"It's not easy, but that's why we work hard and play football to look after our families. Most footballers we work for our families. We always need to look back and take back to the family."
