Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela says his team are still in contention to win the league title despite losing to arch enemy Orlando Pirates 3-1 in an entertaining Soweto Derby on Saturday afternoon.

The defeat sees Chiefs drop down to fifth position, with Free State Stars and Maritzburg United climbing above them into third and fourth spot on the table respectively.

"Are we lagging behind a bit, yes. It was a massive opportunity for us to get closer to Sundowns. Orlando Pirates are there, it is a hell of a confidence boost for them. It could have been for us. That is the beauty of football," Komphela told journalists at the post match press conference.

With just seven matches to go they are now eight points behind leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns.

"We regret the fact that we lost the match. Our fourth loss in the season and the manner in which we lost it, completely uncharacteristic of us. We do not concede many goals and today we conceded three obviously against a good team," Komphela said.

Nonetheless, Komphela says the 21 points still on offer means they cannot throw in the towel.

"You still have to remain positive. In any scenario where mathematically you are in. You still have to keep pushing."

He continued, "We have a huge responsibility to keep delivering. We are performers, we are artists so we cannot stop the show. We have to keep performing. We do not know what is going to happen in the other matches."
