Komphela: Mabasa needs stronger mentality

Cape Town - Bloemfontein Celtic coach Steve Komphela acknowledges that Tshegofatso Mabasa has bags of talent, but feels the youngster needs to improve his mentality.

The 22-year-old striker has hit the ground running this season under Komphela, scoring three goals in eight Premierships starts to help lift the gloom at the cash-strapped club.

Mabasa had only managed to find the back of the net on two occasions last term - both goals coming in the Telkom Knockout as Siwelele reached the final, where they lost 1-0 to Wits.

The Celtic youth product finally registered his first league goal against Chippa United on the opening weekend of the new campaign, before getting on the scoresheet again three days later at Golden Arrows.

After seeing Mabasa bag the winner against Black Leopards last month, Komphela believes he has the attributes to succeed in the game, although the South Africa international must learn not to dwell on his missed chances.

"I think he needs to be stronger mentally," the 51-year-old told KickOff website. "Talent he's got, technical ability he has, he knows how to get into spaces and they do provide him with goals.

"The one thing that I picked up is that there is a goal he missed against Free State Stars and after missing that ball he dropped [his head]. At this level you have to forget the mistakes and look at what it is you do next.

"So, he needs to get to a certain level of mental strength, where as a striker you miss but we remember the goals you score. But we shall work on him because talent he's got."
