Komphela: Defenders win you titles

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs' Steve Komphela has commented on his side's unbeaten run in the PSL, saying a solid defence is key to winning the Premiership title.

Steve Komphela's side have gone seven consecutive games without a loss in the league and following their latest goalless draw against Orlando Pirates - the Soweto giants have managed to equal a record last set in 2005 in not conceding a goal in 540 minutes of league action.

"Credit must be given to the players and they are giving their all. You can see the energy," Komphela told KickOff.

Komphela's charges host Baroka FC at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday, and victory for the Naturena based outfit will see Komphela clinch his maiden Q-Innovation accolade.

The former Maritzburg United mentor highlighted what has been key in Chiefs' winning streak.

"We want to help one another and they fight a lot to get the ball back," he added.

"The organisation defensively starting from even Michelle Katsvairo on top there, to 'Tower' (Erick Mathoho) and (Itumeleng) Khune, they are willing to work for one another.

"And no wonder we kept six clean sheets and I hope it is still going to go on. I hope Itu [Khune] and his defence and the team can also acknowledge that it is not easy to keep clean sheets.

"Celebrate that, it gives great motivation. At the back of so many clean sheets - defenders will win you championships, and goals and strikers will win you matches."

Komphela, who was borrowing from Alex Ferguson's adage, "attack wins you games, defence wins you titles" will be hoping to replicate the success that the Scotsman enjoyed at Manchester United while also leaving a legacy of success.

Chiefs will now look to build on their defensive foundation to make an assault on the PSL title with Komphela having the fortunate problem of having a selection headache with his many attacking options ahead of the Baroka encounter.

Kick off is at 19:30.
