Komphela: Baxter has Chiefs DNA

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela is wary of Nedbank Cup last eight opponents SuperSport United, a team packed full of ex-Amakhosi staff.

SuperSport head coach Stuart Baxter was in charge for Chiefs for three seasons, winning the league title twice as well as the Nedbank Cup.

Former Chiefs players at the Pretoria club include Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Morgan Gould, Thuso Phala, Reyaad Pieterse, Tefu Mashamaite, Keagan Ritchie, Mandla Masango, Kingston Nkhatha and Onismor Bhasera.

While joking about a possible Nedbank Cup final against Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates following Monday night's draw, Komphela also admitted his side will be in for a tough outing against Matsatsantsa.

"We will take it as it comes against SuperSport and maybe we're saving the best (a possible Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates) for last," Komphela jested.

"Stuart (Baxter) has our DNA and most of the players at SuperSport have been with us. They lost just two matches and we lost three, so the statistics are pretty close and both teams are chasing the championship."

Chiefs booked their spot in the quarter-finals witch a 2-1 win over Acornbush United while SuperSport beat another Second Division side, Kwadukuza United, 2-0.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
