Komphela 'addicted' to pressure as Chiefs coach

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela says that he has gotten addicted to the pressure of being the Sowetan giants head coach.

The former Maritzburg United mentor believes that he is sitting in the hottest seat in South Africa as Amakhosi mentor and jokingly wishes the seat he was warm instead of hot.

Chiefs face Cape Town City FC at Cape Town Stadium on Friday evening in a MTN8 quarter-final clash, which comes three days after falling 2-1 to Bidvest Wits in their opening Absa Premiership match.

Komphela refuted the notion that he is under any further pressure in order to erase the memory of starting the season with a defeat.

“It’s nice, you’ve got to be addicted to pressure,” Komphela says with a confident smirk.

“This is one great brand,” he continues. “Who wouldn’t want this job? Even if it be for a day, you’d say, ‘Hey give me the job just for a day and fire me.’

He added: “It’s a wonderful job but you have to embrace the pressure and the most important part of it is, do right, because there are so many people who expect to be happy, which is what drives us.

“If you’ve been given an opportunity to lead… you must be prepared to sacrifice yourself,” Komphela concluded.

Kick-off is at 20:00.
